Demre, Myra and Kekova from Alanya: A Late-Autumn Day Trip Guide

Rock-cut tombs at Myra, the Church of St. Nicholas and the sunken city of Kekova: what to expect on a long autumn day trip from Alanya and how to prepare.

When the beach days in Alanya start to get shorter, it is the perfect moment for one of the most rewarding excursions on the Turkish Riviera. A day trip to Demre, Myra and Kekova combines ancient Lycian history, the story behind Santa Claus and a boat ride over a city that slipped into the sea. In late autumn the air is mild, the sea is calm and the sites are far less crowded than in summer.

A long but scenic road

Demre lies west of Antalya, roughly 280 km from Alanya, so expect around four hours on the road in each direction and an early hotel pickup. The good news: the second half of the drive follows the coast between the Taurus Mountains and the sea, one of the prettiest roads in southern Turkey.

Myra: tombs carved into the cliff

The ancient city of Myra is famous for its Lycian rock tombs, cut into a vertical cliff face so they look like little temple façades. Right below them is a large Roman theatre with carved masks still lying among the stones. It is one of the most photographed spots in the whole region.

The Church of St. Nicholas

In the 4th century, Nicholas served as bishop of Myra. His generosity inspired the legend of Santa Claus, and the church in Demre that carries his name is visited by pilgrims and travellers from all over the world. With December approaching, autumn is a fitting time to see it.

Kekova: the sunken city

The highlight for many guests is the boat trip around Kekova Island. Earthquakes in antiquity sank part of an old settlement, and from the boat you can see walls, stairs and foundations under the clear water. The trip usually passes the village of Simena (Kaleköy), with its small castle and Lycian sarcophagi by the shore. Swimming directly over the sunken ruins is not allowed because the area is protected.

Tips for an autumn visit

  • Wear comfortable shoes – the paths in Myra are uneven.
  • Bring a light jacket: mornings are cool and it can be breezy on the boat.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses are still useful, the autumn sun is strong on the water.
  • Carry some cash for drinks and small souvenirs.
